For my brothers and sisters living with disabilities…

In Uncategorized on March 20, 2009 at 10:39 pm

…and the people, like me, who love them.  We benefit from a powerful and organized lobby, yes?  But completely shut out of Washington for the last eight years, yes? Can count Barack Obama on their side, yes?

Now that we’ve cleared that up, I’m a bit confused.  This morning, after an otherwise incredible visit to the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the grassroots for people with disabilities seems to be up in arms.  Why?  The president made a bad (really bad) joke about bowling and being disabled.  He owned up to it and he apologized.  Genuinely.  And if that isn’t enough, I am confident that his policies will speak for him.

Now let’s forget about the republicans who are looking to take a cheap shot and will harp righteously about an issue they’ve been MIA on for decades.  I’m talking about the people who work on these issues everyday.  Do you honestly believe that Barack Obama harbors some deeply entrenched hatred or prejudice for people who live with disabilities?  Do you honestly think that the same person who reversed Bush’s course on stem cell research within weeks of taking office, won’t be there for you when the chips are down?

I’ve heard many racial comparisons today.  Let me make some comparisons of my own.  Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly. When they laugh openly about “lynching” and “welfare queens”, who do you think they are talking about?  Just guess.  No guesses?

Black people.

And when they make these statements and countless others like them, and we stand up to them about it, we’re called overly sensitive by GOP leaders and others.  Dare stand up and you’re called a “race pimp.”

The difference?

Republicans actually make and carry out public policy that follows this hateful rhetoric.  What do they mean when they say the Community Reinvestment Act was a castrophy that should’ve never passed and our economy is melting down as a result?  They mean we shouldn’t have made it possible for all those “niggers” to buy homes and now that they cannot pay the whole world is going to hell.

For weeks, there was a stream of republicans– including Michelle “the Lunatic” Bachman– blaming the housing crisis on minorities.  They entirely forgot about the credit default swaps sold by AIG and others.  Don’t know what CDSs are?  Then you don’t belong in a public discussion about the economic crisis.  The former CEO of AIG just called America “the greatest country”.  I bet.

I have no doubt at all that President Obama is sorry for his unfortunate remark.  I actually gasped when I heard it.  But I also have no doubt at all that will act in the interest of people living with disabilities in this country every day that he is in office.

  1. Finally back to throwing daggers at convservatives. I am sorry to hear about your lose.

Since obama has made federal funding for stem cell research possible he is “there for” people with disablities? Its pretty funny how you turn his insensitive comments into a positive for the president and then somehow you turn it into a race issue.

I am not familiar with the republicans blame the minorities argument. So i would appreciate some examples. I also have no idea why you drag el rushbo and billo into the argument. What are supposed to call it when someone is lynched?

  2. What are your thoughts on Uhuru movement?

  3. I’m always here for you Tim! LOL! I didn’t turn it into a racial issue. They did. Michelle was never “lynched”. Billo made the reference, not me. I made the comparisons and they were the right ones to make. I didn’t hear an uproar about their comments… certainly not on the order that we heard about Americans with disabilities.

  4. The Uhuru Movement should sit down somewhere and STFU. They are equally as racist and twisted as El Rushbo.

  5. “Michelle was never lynched” I dont know what story you are referring to. Disabilities or housing crisis was made into a racial issue by them? I am hoping you honestly dont think rushbo is as bad at the Uhuru. Rush may make insensiteve comments and he may preach personal responsibility, he might even deny bureaucracy to help minorites but in any case that does not parallel martyring a rapist and killer.

  6. Actually, I do believe he is. And yes, the parallels were made by a variety of cable news and radio talk show pundits.

  7. Come on goldie!!! you have to give me an example were any conservative pundit has caused that much pain and suffering to multiple families. There cant be many more evil people in the world worse than the Uhuru, the Uhuru are justifing murder!!! There is no difference between them and the KKK. Still you say that Rush is equally as bad? That is crazy, i disagree with schultz, colmes, and liberal pundits but i wont paint them as evil.

  8. Tim, you might be the only one here, but I’d like you to leave my page.

  9. No problem, I enjoyed the debates before and looked forward to learning more from you. If my opinions and questions are to insensitive and tough then i will gladly leave.

  10. Goldie,
Do you ever listen to Rush? Do you ever watch Oreilly or listen to his radio show before he left?
You told me once that you used to be a republican or at least somewhat conservative. So assuming that some thread of traditional thought still exists in your mind, please enlighten me as to the reasons why you harbor such distasteful feelngs towards influential, albeit loud mouthed typed conservatives, the likes of Rush, Bill O, Malkin, Coulter etc.
I personally prefer less arrogant toned folks like Dennis Prager or entertainment types like Dennis Miller. But is it the conservative posistions that irks you or do you actually see race in everything or what?
I believe that Obama’s gaffe, was no gaffe at all. I think that was him showing a glimpse of being a real person.
As to your comment about Repubs who demonize the Comm Revinestment Act, you should not make such strong claims without evidence, nor should you believe there are such ideological absolutes. Again, the CRAct did play a part in the financial crisis, as did about a million other factors, some more some less. But your comment is basically saying if a repub points to this they hate black people. Thats ridiculous.

  11. Actually, I do listen to Rush with great regularity. O’Reilly too. It was Michelle Bachman who blamed minorities for the mortgage meltdown and included the CRA in her talking points. She said it loud and clear on cable news. No one from the GOP ever called her, or others who echoed the sentiment, to account for it. No one.

In term’s of the GOP’s relationship (or lack there of) to racial minorities. They only have themselves to blame for it. I have personally witnessed the intolence.

With respect to how I should “enlighten” you. That surely is not my responsibility. I suggest you find another platform.
