Open Spaces

In General, Living on October 17, 2009 at 8:35 pm

When I launched this blog a year or so ago, I thought of it as a space to host of conversation.  About what, I didn’t know– but the trick was (and still is) consistency.  At the time, I thought it would be easy to sit down each day and strum out a missive that meant something to someone other than me.  But there’s something about open spaces.

Open vistas are often more scary and treacherous than dark closets where one can be alone and without inspection.  There’s something very intimidating about sharing yourself with the broader world.  Not that I’ve known or recognized much in the way of intimidation in my life.  I like to think of myself as fearless.  But again… there’s something about those open spaces.

So, I took a break– some time to regroup.  Courage, I know, is not acting in the absence of fear.  It is acting, creating in the very face of it.  So I come here again, in conversation often with only myself, to share what I think is important in the world, vent about all things Goldie and celebrate a renewed life.  If you’re here too, then that’s good.  I will try to come more often.

So here’s the thing…

… a little over a week ago, I wrote an opinion editorial called “A Woman’s Worth.”  It started out as just an e-mail to friends (500 of them!) and quickly spread across the country.  Some friends reported getting my message 6 or 7 times.  My editorial reached and touched people in Hawaii, Singapore, London, and the Bahamas.  It’s been cross-posted on other blogs and in chat rooms. Oh, the power of the Internet!

Even better, EbonyJet.com decided to publish it in the “Politics and Perspectives” section.  At last count over 40,000 people visited that page and left more comments for that essay than for any other in the website’s history.  (Okay, I’m blushing).

I have received too many e-mails to count (or to respond to, but I try), the traffic to this blog it way up (thank you!) and even my personal website at www.goldietaylor.net has experienced a surge.  I am being followed on Twitter, friended on Facebook and hooked up with on LinkedIn.  All I can say is WOW!

To all of you, I say “thank you.”  Over the last few days, I have been sent good wishes and told many inspiring stories from women, like me, who struggle to survive, cope and make it on a daily basis.  Those women are swimming upstream, against the tide.  It shouldn’t be that way.  But it is.  I know first hand.

Based on your messages, I think I have a prayer circle around me strong enough to carry me 1,000 lifetimes.  But keep them coming!

My original intent was to use this blog to tell my story, that of my family, and have a running dialogue with the people who buy my books.  [The January Girl and In My Father's House] This latest political venture represents a detour.  I hope you don’t mind.

I have something (or rather a few things) to say about this most historic election and a few others things about America’s culture, politics and faith.  It is the most important vote I will likely cast in this lifetime.  So visit often, leave comments, and tell me what you’d like me to talk about.  Because, here’s the thing…

It’s not a conversation if you aren’t in it.  Thanks again for coming.  Grab a cup of coffee and let’s chat.

Peace, G
